Most of us live in relatively close quarters with our neighbours in Singapore, but when does “close” become “too close for comfort’?
Different people have different privacy tolerance levels, so it really depends. But the bottom line for most would be when their neighbours can see most things they are doing, or even hear their conversations.
Over the years, we’ve done various types of outdoor privacy screens for customers. Other than providing homeowners with more privacy, some of the screens also serve as sun shades. More importantly, all these outdoor privacy screens are durable and can withstand the hot sun and rain in Singapore.
Here, we share some of the outdoor privacy screens that we’ve done over the years.
Typical Corner Terrace Partition Fence in Singapore
If you can use it on the floor, you can use it on the wall. Decking strips can be arranged vertically or horizontally like in this landed home. The wooden privacy screen added a modern stylish look to the backyard.
Wooden Privacy Screen
There used to be cooking smells wafting over from their neighbour who has an outdoor kitchen but the wooden screen put an end to that.
Wooden Privacy Screen for Staircase
In another home, wooden strips are arranged to form a screen to shield the stairway that has an open concept. This way, people wearing skirts can use the stairs without fear.
Wooden Screen under Circular Stairwell
You can play with the distance between the wooden strips to create more or less coverage.
Artificial Hedge Privacy Screen
Artificial hedges are an easy way to incorporate greenery into your garden landscape while giving you privacy. The foliage and voids between the leaves also help to absorb noise. All these make for better neighbourly relationship.
Other than a full green hedge, you can incorporate colour by using coloured foliage in any design you desire, making it easy to create your very own outdoor haven.
Green Wall Privacy Screen with Ventilation
You can also make an art piece out of your privacy screen. Cover up strategically with artificial vertical garden panels and leave other parts open to allow air to circulate.
As compared to a live green hedge screen, artificial ones do not need much maintenance and does not need to consume
Custom-made vertical planter box privacy screens are really versatile and can be made in any configuration you like.
Planter Box Privacy Screen
This one that we made consists of planter boxes that the homeowner can accentuate with potted plants, other decoration items or use a storage. The screen helped to ensure that people cannot peer into the master bedroom from the living room balcony.

In this other project, the privacy screen took the form of a storage bench. The wooden screen is easy to style with creepers or hanging potted plants. It’s a great focal design point during the festive season like Christmas or Chinese New Year. More importantly, it shields the residents from prying eyes of the neighbours.

Bamboo Fence Privacy Screen
Then the bamboo fence may be the right type of privacy screen for your home. These bamboo sticks are treated to ensure that they can withstand Singapore’s hot and wet weather.
Before there were all the other options listed above, people used live plants and shrubs as privacy screens. Other than providing privacy, the plants add much needed greenery to our concrete jungle. The air quality also improves with live plants.
Live Plants Privacy Screen
With a shrub wall or live privacy screen, you’ll have to factor in time and costs to water and prune the plants regularly. In the event that any of the shrubs are not doing well, you may end up with a hole in your privacy screen.
