Living in sunny Singapore means that we have more chances than those living in temperate climates to enjoy the outdoors. And given our Singaporean food-loving culture, the ideal way for us to enjoy the outdoors would be at a cafe with alfresco dining. Yup.

But given how crowded (and not to mention quite ridiculously expensive) some cafes are these days, some of us would rather stay home and chillax. So if you do have a balcony, it would make sense to invest in it and make it a great place to lounge in without having to jostle with the crowds and burn a hole in your pocket.

We recently transformed a balcony for a customer and here are 5 ideas you should totally steal for your balcony. I know I’m definitely going to!

    1. Mixing Decking with Artificial Grass

Perfect Match: Decking and Artificial Turf

Sometimes, we meet homeowners who cannot decide between wooden decking and artificial turf and they ask us: “So, which one should I choose?” In this case, you don’t have to choose, just take both!

And some people think that their balconies have to be as big as this for two materials to work. But it’s not true. The different colours and textures of wood versus turf actually breaks up a small space and adds more visual interest to make the balcony look bigger than it is.

There’s also something really outdoorsy about the look of wood and grass together.

    2. Artificial Green Wall

Seriously, most urbanites have no time to care for a “live” green wall. But, a green wall is exactly what a balcony needs to liven up the place and add that extra “oomph” to your home decor. It’s one of the reasons why we pay so much for a cuppa at the cafe. So why not take that money and invest in your own balcony?

Here, we used the artificial green wall design OD013 Triple Delight and customized it with a splash of red for this customer and voila, the balcony looks like it stepped right out of a Home and Decor magazine spread.

There are many other designs to choose from, but it is important to choose the outdoor designs if you are going to fit the artificial green wall at the balcony. Because of our strong sunlight here in Singapore, we only use the best plants from GreenTurf meant for the outdoors. These will not fade and change colour quickly, and are made absolutely safe for you and your family.

    3. Using “Live” Plants

The clever use of larger pots of plants here literally make this balcony come to live. We may not have time to care for many many tiny plants, but big pots of plants, when chosen carefully, can be easily maintained. These hardy plants hold up well even when the homeowners are away for holidays for a few days and help to provide some shade too.

    4. Water Feature with Cute Figurines

The small water feature doesn’t take up much space and adding the cute figurines of small animals make the kids really happy. There’s not enough water to be much of a hazard to the family, yet the water feature provides much visual interest and fun to the family.

    5. Orange Pops

These cheerful pops of orange cushions in the outdoor furniture just makes you feel like you’re at some resort already. Just imagine yourself curled up on your outdoor couch, sipping your cup of Nescafe Dolce (or Nespresso, if you’re a George Clooney fan), with the latest trashy romance novel Sunday Times and enjoying the breeze on your face. Now, isn’t that a better way to spend your weekends than getting squeezed at the cafe?
